The Ultimate La Jolla Hike: Torrey Pines

About 15 Minutes from Pantai Inn

Torrey Pines State Natural Preserve is one of the most iconic hiking spots in Southern California. It’s home to the rare Torrey pine, plus a network of trails that offer ocean views and peaceful surroundings. Most of the trails here are well-kept and beginner-friendly, making it great for all ages. One of the most popular routes is the Beach Trail, which leads you down to the sand for a scenic return walk along the shoreline. As you hike, keep an eye out for paragliders and hang gliders flying overhead from the nearby Gliderport.

Feeling bold? You can book a tandem paragliding or hang gliding flight at Fly Torrey for a thrilling view of the coastline.

The “Neighborhood” Hike: La Jolla Coast Walk Trail

Steps from Pantai Inn

This easy coastal path is just outside your door. Start at Pantai Inn and walk north along the water, stopping first at Shell Beach and Rocky Point. Depending on the tides, you may be able to step right onto the sand. Continue toward La Jolla Cove where the bright waters are often filled with swimmers and seals. As you pass the vintage Cave Shop, hop on the dirt path with panoramic views of La Jolla Shores and beyond. The trail eventually loops back through the Village where you can grab a coffee or juice before heading to your final stop—Children’s Pool Beach. From there, it’s just a short walk back to Pantai Inn.

This trail is a great way to explore the heart of La Jolla without ever getting in your car.

The Urban Adventure: Balboa Park Trails

If you want a hike with a side of culture, head to Balboa Park. With over 1,200 acres, this city park has gardens, museums, historic architecture, and even the San Diego Zoo. It also has 19 official trails totaling about 65 miles. Some take you through wooded areas, while others wind past fountains and museums. Highlights include the Cabrillo Bridge, the peaceful Lily Pond, and the massive Moreton Bay Fig tree. It’s a hike-meets-city experience you can tailor to your interests and energy level.

After your hike, stop by Panama 66 for outdoor dining and live music in the sculpture garden of the San Diego Museum of Art.

The One in the Woods: Blacks Canyon Trail

About 10 Minutes from Pantai Inn

Blacks Canyon Trail is a hidden gem nestled within the eucalyptus groves of UC San Diego. This 1.8-mile out-and-back trail is shady, quiet, and easy enough for kids. As you walk, look out for birds, lizards, and seasonal wildflowers. It’s one of the few trails in the area that stays cool during sunny days, making it perfect for a morning or afternoon stroll. While the trail itself is inland, you’ll still catch glimpses of the Pacific Ocean in the distance.

There is free one-hour parking available at the Hopkins Parking Structure, making this hike as convenient as it is peaceful.

Whether you’re chasing ocean views or looking for a quiet nature escape, these local trails give you the best of La Jolla and San Diego. Happy hiking!
